Brief History

The company began 1888 as the Anglo-American Oil Company and was Standard Oil Trust, John D. Rockefeller's first foreign affiliate. Its head office was based in Bishopsgate, London, and had a depot in Purfleet, Essex. One year later, they started distributing refined petrol products nationwide in bulk. In 1890, they opened a three-acre site in Avonmouth at Broad Pill. This was to manufacture storage tanks for oil, and two years after that, they started supplying gas oil for town gas manufacturing.

In the early 20th century, the company opened its first petrol station where customers could use pumps to top up their own fuel. In 1980, Esso shops were introduced, with the goal of offering motorists the convenience of the corner shop for refuelling. Perhaps the most significant event in recent history was the merger between Exxon Corporation/Esso and Mobil Oil Company in 1999 to establish ExxonMobil Corporation, as the company is known now.
