Millets: Your Trusted Outdoor Retailer in the UK
Millets is one of the UK’s most popular, leading, and trusted outdoor equipment and clothing retailers. The name is synonymous with all things outdoors, and the company even has the slogan ‘At home, outdoors’. Its inventory of products—including footwear, walking and camping equipment, tents, and lots more essential items—is highly regarded by outdoor activity experts for its quality.
Millets has over 90 stores in the UK, including in major cities like London, Liverpool, and Manchester. Stores are typically located on high streets and in shopping centres.
Millets opening times vary by location, generally they are open Monday to Saturday from 9 am to 5-6 pm and Sunday from 10 am to 4-6 pm. Opening times vary by location and during public holidays such as New Year’s Day, Christmas, and Easter. Use the Millets store locator to ensure a Millets near you is open today.
To identify a Millets store on the street, try to spot its storefront and logo. The storefront is most often black or has black signage above the entrance. The logo is a fresh-green circle with a mountain peek inside that is also reusable with an ‘up’ arrow; next to it is the brand name “millets” in a simple lowercase font. A smaller subtext most often accompanies it, ‘the outdoor store’.
Although Millets is a name that most people know, there might still be some facts about the store that you didn’t know!
- Millets raised a total of £100,000 for the BBC’s Children in Need in 2017.
- There was more than one retailer trading as Millets. It is thought that because the Millett family gave their name to the original store and had many daughters, they gave them a dowry of one store or more run by the sons-in-law, who operated them under different company names with various qualifiers in brackets.
- In the beginning, Millets was a manufacturer of tents for the Royal Navy and Army.
- The company launched “This is My Way,” a profile of seven incredible women and their inspirational stories, including Jen Wood, a climber for Team GB; Esmée Gummer, a motivational speaker and personal trainer; and Abigale Lawton, a mountain biker.
- JD Sports Fashion bought the company as part of Blacks Outdoor Retail in 2012.
As one of the biggest and most popular outdoor equipment, clothing, and accessories retailers, Millets stocks a wide selection of everything the intrepid outdoor adventurer could need and want. This includes a full selection of men’s, women’s, and kids’ clothing. Winter jackets, coats, waterproof jackets, insulated and down jackets, parkas, fleece and gilets, trousers, hoodies, and T-shirts for both genders are available. There are also various types of footwear and accessories.
Clothing is one of many things sold, as there is a large supply of tents, camping accessories, and rucksacks, among many other things. Modern hiking equipment such as watches, activity trackers, and GPS navigational tools is also popular.
The company we now know as Millets was established when numerous companies came together. It began in 1893 when the founder, J.M. Millet, opened an outfitter and drapers’ shop in Bristol and Southampton before passing the store onto his grandson, J.B. Spielman, in 1923. The range was increased to include shoes, boots, clothing, and so much more, and this helped the company grow to have five stores by around 1939. However, World War II happened, and due to bomb damage and stock shortages, they were forced to shut two stores by around 1951.
However, it managed to recover, and by 1961, it had 11 new shops and then bought Hendersons Sports and Marcus Stores Limited, giving the company 54 shops. It was then taken over in 1979 by Foster Brothers Clothing plc. The other side of the business started when Morris Millett opened a haberdashery in Croydon in 1920. It had eight stores by 1948, and eventually, both Millets and Milletts joined together when Foster Brothers Clothing bought Milletts in 1984. Nowadays, it has gone through several other changes and has settled with JD Sports Fashion, which bought it in 2012 and continues to own it to this day.
